Professor J.W. Verret is Associate Professor of Corporate and Securities Law at George Mason University School of Law and a practicing forensic accountant who brings unique expertise to high-stakes corporate and commercial litigation. He holds multiple professional certifications including CPA, Certified in Financial Forensics (CFF), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA), and Certified Cryptocurrency Forensic Investigator (CCFI). He has been a Visiting Professor at Stanford Law School and holds a certificate from the Wharton School in the Economics of Blockchain.
Professor Verret served on the U.S. FASB's Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Committee, which advises on the development of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and previously served on the Securities and Exchange Commission's Investor Advisory Committee, where he advised the Chairman and Commissioners on investor protection matters. He has been designated as an expert in federal court in United States v. Sterlingov, a $300 million Bitcoin money laundering case, and has extensive experience in securities litigation, corporate governance disputes, and cryptocurrency forensics.
He previously served as Chief Economist at the U.S. House Financial Services Committee and as Independent Chairman of the Board of Directors of a leading U.S. credit rating agency. Professor Verret serves on the board of directors of the Zcash Foundation and is Chairman of the Blockchain Association's Cybersecurity Working Group. He holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School, a Masters in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School, and a Bachelor's degree in Financial Accounting. He clerked for the Delaware Court of Chancery and has testified before Congress over a dozen times on financial regulatory matters.
