Prof. Dr. Omar Salah is a Partner at Norton Rose Fulbright LLP, Amsterdam and London. He is also a Professor of Global Finance and Restructuring Law at Tilburg University.
He is Head of Financial Restructuring and Insolvency, Amsterdam at Norton Rose Fulbright LLP. His restructuring practice covers a range of financial restructuring and insolvency cases, including bank and bond debt restructurings, distressed M&A transactions and trading in non-performing loans (NPL). He has been involved in some of the most complex cross-border insolvencies globally, including Dutch insolvency proceedings (Dutch scheme called ‘WHOA’, suspension of payments and bankruptcy proceedings), UK scheme of arrangement and US Chapter 15 proceedings. In addition, he has advised various financial institutions (banks and insurance companies) on their recovery and resolution proceedings.
He is also an expert in banking and finance transactions having advised on numerous leveraged and acquisition financings, asset-based financings corporate loans. He has noted experience in Islamic finance. Omar has acted for many international corporates on their finance transactions, often covering multiple jurisdictions. He has also advised sponsors, banks and direct lenders in Term Loan B transactions, unitranche financing and other leveraged finance transactions.
Prior to joining Norton Rose Fulbright LLP, Omar worked at De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek N.V., Amsterdam and Singapore offices (2011-2021) as well as at King & Spalding, London offices (2010). He obtained a PhD in law at Tilburg University (2014) with a thesis on Islamic finance, more in particular on sukuk (Islamic securities). Previously, he was a Visiting Professor on Islamic finance at IE University, Madrid (2015-2019). He publishes extensively and has lectured at various universities across the globe.
