Expert resume of Matthew Elderfield
Non Executive Director, Former Chief Risk Officer and Management Board member, Nordea Bank, and former senior regulator in the EU, UK and Bermuda.
Matthew is currently a member of an expert group appointed by the European Central Bank to conduct an independent external assessment of its supervisory review and evaluation process.
He was a member of the Nordea Bank Management Board between 2016 and 2022, most recently serving as Chief Risk Officer. Previously he was at Lloyds Banking Group between 2013 and 2016 in the role of Group Director, Conduct, Compliance and Operational Risk.
Matthew was Deputy Governor and Member of the Commission (Board) of the Central Bank of Ireland in the Eurosystem between 2010 and 2013. During this period, he served as Deputy Chairman of the European Banking Authority and was a member of the Governing Council of the European Systemic Risk Board, the Managing Board of the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority and the Board of Supervisors of the European Securities Markets Authority.
Matthew was Chief Executive of the Bermuda Monetary Authority between 2007 and 2009 when he also served as a member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors. Between 1999 and 2007 he worked at the UK Financial Services Authority in a number of roles involving banking supervision, markets policy and exchange and clearing house supervision.
Matthew has also worked for the International Swaps and Derivatives Association, the London Investment Banking Association, and the British Bankers Association in London and the predecessor organisation of Federal Financial Analytics in Washington DC.
He is a graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service (1987) and Cambridge University (1988).
