Expert resume of Lee C. Buchheit

Lee C. Buchheit retired in early 2019 after a 43 year career with Cleary Gottlieb Steen and Hamilton LLP. He served in the New York, London, Washington, DC and Hong Kong offices of that firm.

Mr. Buchheit's practice focused principally on international financial transactions with a particular emphasis on sovereign debt management. He has worked on the sovereign debt restructurings of over two dozen countries, normally as counsel to the sovereign debtor. Mr. Buchheit led the legal teams advising the Republic of Iraq in the restructuring of that country's Saddam era indebtedness (2004-11) as well as the restructuring in 2011-12 of over EUR 200 billion of bond indebtedness of the Hellenic Republic -- the two largest sovereign debt workouts in history.

Mr. Buchheit is the author of two books in the field of international law and over 40 articles on professional matters. He has taught courses at a number of universities including Yale, Columbia, Harvard, Duke, Chuo University (Japan) and New York University. He currently serves as an Honorary Professor at the University of Edinburgh Law School and as a Visiting Professorial Fellow at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies in London.

Mr. Buchheit received an undergraduate degree from Middlebury College, his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and a Diploma in International Law from Cambridge University.
