Julia Lu is a partner in the New York office of Ashurst LLP, an international law firm, and a member of the derivatives and global loans practice groups of the firm.
Ms. Lu is a recognized leader in the market for credit derivatives transactions and related regulatory issues. She was a primary working group member in the design and creation of loan credit default swap products in North America and Europe, and advised the International Swaps and Derivatives Association regarding settlement issues under the Big Bang Protocol. More recently, she assisted The Loan Syndications and Trading Association in its lobbying efforts relating to Title VII of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.
Ms. Lu advises and advocates for derivatives end-users and intermediaries in connection with CDS events, including recent, well-known events involving Sears Roebuck Acceptance Corp., Hovnanian Enterprises, Inc., Windstream Services LLC, iHeartCommunications, Inc., Novo Banco S.A. and Caesars Entertainment Corporation, among numerous others. She was the lead partner on the amicus brief submitted to the ISDA Determinations Committee External Review Panel for the Credit Event in respect of Sears, and on one of the two briefs that led to the successful outcome in the External Review in respect of Caesars.
Ms. Lu is also an expert in credit trading and special situations investing. She advises major broker-dealers and investment funds in connection with distressed situations worldwide, leading the firm’s trading efforts in high-profile situations such as Lehman Brothers.
Ms. Lu is widely quoted in financial and legal publications including Bloomberg, Creditflux, International Financing Review, Law360, and The Wall Street Journal, and a frequent speaker and author on issues in the credit and derivatives markets.
Previously Ms. Lu was the acting Chief Operating Officer of the Bank Loan Syndication and Trading Desk of Goldman Sachs, a partner of Crowell & Moring LLP (previously Kibbe & Orbe LLP) and an associate at the New York Office of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP. She is a native speaker of mandarin Chinese.
