James Freeman is a partner in the international arbitration practice of A&O Shearman, where he has worked for his entire career. He is based in London. He practises both commercial and investor-state arbitration. He has conducted arbitrations at all of the major seats and under all of the major sets of arbitral rules.
James has particular experience of arbitrations in the finance sector, across a wide range of asset classes. For a number of years, he has advised the International Swaps and Derivatives Association on its ISDA Arbitration Guide. He has written and spoken widely on the intersection between arbitration and finance.
James is an English-qualified lawyer and a Solicitor Advocate who routinely appears as an advocate in his cases. He sits on the executive committee of the Foundation for International Arbitration Advocacy and teaches advocacy to junior arbitration practitioners on its programs.
