Presentation for Dutch Financial Club in New York

On 5 February 2018, Gerard Meijer, Secretary General of P.R.I.M.E. Finance, was invited to the Dutch Financial Club in New York to talk about his experience enforcing arbitral awards in the Netherlands. Investment arbitrations against sovereign states have increased in recent years. Arbitral tribunals have awarded claims in the range of hundreds of millions of dollars. Although such an award may be satisfying in itself, the real challenges begin when trying to enforce an award, especially when the award debtor is a sovereign state that can invoke immunity of enforcement in certain circumstances. Gerard shared his experience in the field of enforcement of investment arbitration awards, including acting as Dutch counsel to the Stati family in their dispute against the Republic of Kazachstan.

The presentation was given to an audience of Dutch expats from companies in New York, such as Rabobank, ABN Amro, ING and lawyers from different Dutch law firms.
