Academic background

Prof. Dr. Peter Nobel studied political science at the University of St. Gallen; he graduated in 1973 with a doctoral thesis entitled “The Harmonization of Corporation Law in the European Common Market” (Dr. rer. publ.). For the following 3 years, he was engaged as a research assistant to Prof. Dr. Arthur Meier-Hayoz at the University of Zurich (involved in commercial and company law), and for 1 1/2 years, he was a research scholar at the University of Göttingen with Prof. Dr. Franz Wieacker (focusing on legal history in the field of corporations). Prof. Nobel was also a visiting scholar at the Lomonossov University of Moscow, where he worked as an assistant to Prof. Denissow (general theory of law) and at Columbia University School of Law in New York. He received his habilitation from the University of St. Gallen in 1981, where he was a lecturer since 1982. On April 1, 1984, he was promoted to full professor and, on October 1, 1997, he became a professor “Extraordinarius” for Private, Trade and Commercial Law. Prof. Nobel also served as Director of the Institute for European Law at the University of St. Gallen. On May 11, 2010, he was given emeritus status. On March 1, 2007, he was appointed as “ordinary professor ad personam” for Swiss and international business and commercial law at the University of Zurich. Here, he was given emeritus status on July 31, 2012. Prof. Nobel also served as editor-in-chief of the “Schweizerische Zeitschrift für Wirtschaftsrecht” (Swiss Review of Business Law, SZW) from 1995 until 2013, during which time he was also a member of the editorial board of the “European Company and Financial Law Review” (ECFR). From 2006 until 2015 he was a member of the editorial team of the on-line professional magazine “Jusletter,” where he was responsible for the section on Swiss finance and capital market law. Finally, Prof. Nobel has authored numerous publications in various legal areas.

Professional Activities

Prof. Dr. Peter Nobel was admitted to the Zurich Bar in 1980 and, in 1982, he became a founding partner of Nobel & Hug. For 17 years, between 1980 and 1997, Prof. Nobel served as a part-time professional judge at the Superior Court and Court of Commerce of the Canton of Zurich, where he was regularly engaged. In 1998, he was elected as a Judge at the Commercial Court of the Canton of Zurich, an office that he held until the end of 2015. From 1988 to 2000, he served as a member of the Swiss Federal Banking Commission (a governmental committee which supervises the banking industry, brokers and stock exchanges in Switzerland - today, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, “FINMA”).
